Once we decide to be friends and I tell him my name, we simply settle on our respective couches and read in silence. There was a moment when he looked at me that I thought he would ask me a million questions, but he went back to reading.
Well, I can't actually tell if he's reading or not, because I refuse to look up for fear of the chance that he will too.
Every part of my body is somehow aware of his presence. I don't think I've ever been this aware of another individual, especially not while I'm engrossed in a book. I can't get a read on him. Usually, I can tell about people, but everything the prince does seems to confuse me.
Tetia Masha taught me that royals are standoffish people with minimal concern for mundane things, which is why I should steer clear of them as much as possible. Yet, here is the prince, bringing a stranger into his library, offering tea and a warm blanket and a place to stay for the night.
I think that was why I didn't immediately recognize him when we met. I saw him at the ball for a moment, true, but there he held himself upright and regal. Someone who would've had a problem with me ripping his shirt, but the prince didn't make a fuss about it and he hasn't ordered me to do anything either.
He's listened and he's asked questions and he has offered friendship. Something I never thought anyone of his status would ever do. He looks intimidating and capable, yet there are glimpses of kindness under the exterior.
Eventually, I can't help myself, I sneak a peek over at him and find his head bent over a book. His eyebrows are furrowed in concentration and from this position he looks more gruff than I've ever seen him. He shifts in his seat just slightly, lifting the book so I can see the cover for a second before he places it on the arm of the loveseat.
"A murder mystery?" My mouth seems to be moving before I make a conscious decision to speak. He looks up immediately, our gazes clashing and suddenly it's ten degrees hotter in the room.
"Do you have something against murder mysteries?" he asks, raising his eyebrows as he closes the book and gives me his undivided attention. It makes me shift in my seat, but I can't look away.
"Only if I don't solve the mystery," I reply.
"Hmm, that feels a little unfair to the mystery."
"Wow, you're taking the mystery's side. I'm not sure how I feel about that."
"Ah, another mystery for you to solve then."
I stare at him for a second and then we both grin, as I shake my head a little. "I think that might be the strangest conversation I've ever had."
"Stick around, I can definitely get stranger." The prince chuckles, puffing out his chest a little and slapping it like he's proud. When I laugh, it's more carefree than I expect to be in his presence.
